Except for special
projects where they may feed barley or acorns, all
of Eden Farms' pigs are fed a regular corn and
soybean meal ration. Why this ration? Corn has 9 of 10
essential amino acids for a hog’s dietary needs. The
only one it is short of is lysine. Lysine comes from
soybean meal. Essential soybean meal is extruded
soybeans cooked and prepared for a hog’s diet.
Additionally there are vitamins and trace minerals that
are added in for the hogs health.
Some other companies like
to feed barley so they can have a harder, whiter fat.
This comes naturally to 100% Eden Farms Purebred
Berkshire hogs as genetically their pigs have that
hard, white fat. A veterinarian that has done some
testing has evidence that with Eden Farm’s
genetics their products' meat and fat are higher in
Omega-3’s.
There is a very
important difference between Eden Farm’s 100% Berkshire
and some other “kurabuta” (which means black pig, but
not necessarily authentic Berkshire)
providers. Some companies use ractopamines or
repartitioning agents that act as hormones. It makes the
pigs’ constitution leaner and heavier muscled. Eden
Farms uses none of those. That is why they have
consistently great flavor every time. Their hogs
also have incredible hard white back fat
that many of our customers seek.
"Eden Farms" is not a
packer contract, they are not a marketing group, they
are 100% producer owned. The producers understand their
responsibility to the consumer by raising hogs in the
best way possible to produce exceptional product. They
realize the intrinsic value of each pig and hope to pass
that onto you and the consumer. If there is any profit
at the end of the day it all goes to the producers
thanks to those of us who support these small
farmers.
